Everything Brazen Barbie does is with complete assuredness.
Catching up with Ify on Up For It, she’s fully confident in each part of her art. When asked about her major influences and inspirations:
“I feel, like – myself.”
Originally from Perth (‘Peace City” as she calls it), now based in Melbourne, Brazen Barbie has released an impressive catalogue of singles over the last few years. Her music hits hard, but she carries an air that’s also totally unfazed and cool – an frame of mind reflected in the artist name she’s adopted:
“Bold, without shame… but it also means, like strong, made of brass.”
Brazen Barbie borrows creatively from U.S. trap music conventions, avoiding the weak imitation formulas often plaguing Aus hip-hop. Her new single, ‘DON’T TALK’ is maybe her best yet – taking cues from current-day Detroit hip-hop with its beat, and memorable quotables on top of it “He said the sky is blue, I told him I don’t trust him.” Ultimately, it’s a simple formula:
‘So, bass-heavy beat, get in the zone, feel like a bad bitch, and then…”
Completely independent, it’s impressive what Brazen Barbie has built in only a couple years of releasing music. It’s a sign of undeniable ambition – when asked about her “dream live show” by Ify, Brazen Barbie answered without hesitation:
“Super Bowl.”
