Dyan Tai

Dyan Tai faces the camera with a fierce look on their face. They are wearing bright red and white makeup on their face. They hold their hands up in front of them, splayed to show short long golden glittery nails. The background of the image has been photoshopped to show a violet sky and angel wings.

Dyan Tai has done a lot for the culture here in so-called Sydney.

As a broadcaster and founder of Worship Queer Collective, they work tirelessly to empower queer & BIPOC voices throughout the community. As a musician, producer and performance artist, they fearlessly push the boundaries of electronic music, bringing traditional Southeast Asian soundscapes into the hyperpop space.

Their latest track ‘Let’s Get Bubble Tea!’ continues this fusion with its hyperpop chiptuned vocals set alongside Chinese flutes and the Gamelan. The track is infectious and delicious. It has this sugary, addictive feel to it which overlays a sweet dedication to their mum and Asian mums everywhere.

“I remember coming out to my mum at the airport. Probably like, the wrong time to come out to my mum, on the way to Sydney, and she just had to deal with it on the nine hour flight from Kuala Lumpur to Sydney, and she was so upset. She’s like, passports, passports, everybody got their bags. It was so awkward.”

Dyan joined Ruby & Al on Friday Arvos for a candid chat about their new song, their work as an independent artist and lots more.
