It’s not always easy being a young creative in Sydney – something that silkyedgez, our newest Independent Artist of the Week, knows intimately.

Chatting to Ifeoma Obiegbu on Up For It, silkyedgez, said her new single, ‘WYA (want you around)’, was written over a year ago – but undertook a lengthy journey to it’s final release date.

“To get it finished and mixed was such a long process because there was things in life that just came up and that delayed my process.”

Luckily, it’s worth the wait. ‘WYA’ evolves her hushed but assured dark RnB style with a more jersey-club inspired beat, replete with shimmering hi-hats and cheeky finger-snaps.

Originally finding her footing during a stint living, making music and performing in London, silkyedgez is still also grappling with making music in her hometown, Sydney, but staying optimistic.

“I think the scene here is evolving at such a fast pace. And I think there’s some things that happened that like made me lose a bit of confidence in myself to be able to, I don’t know, perform well, especially as a female in such a male dominant industry. It’s like, scary.“But I think with like the experiences that I’ve had in the past couple of years, I’ve been able to build my confidence.”

‘WYA’ is a confident new direction for sikyedgez, but also a sign of more creative evolution to come – silkyedgez telling Ify her next track will be ‘pop punk’ inspired.

She credits this creative flexibility with to one of the perks of being a young artist – making fun things with your friends.

“I think the reason I make music is because I’m able to like, work closely with my friends”“I want to work with all my friends.”
