Kokoroko translates to "be strong" in the Nigerian language and tribe of Urhobo. Musically, it idenitifes the UK group that champions this notion; exploring their cultural West African history, and swaying the hips of their global village. Since their involvement in Giles Peterson's 2018 compilation We Out Here, Kokoroko prove the strength in their name through live performance and bodies of work. Adding another to their rich catalogue, their latest Get The Message EP praises community, connection and relationships, as well as honouring their African heritage. That's why we're continuing the party with two of the EPs tracks for your Sunlit Artist this week.

Interview
The human experience is wrapped in many things, but when the weighted blanket slips off and we’re left stark naked, the confrontation of fear, challenge, and even plain acknowledgment of circumstances you deem detrimental to self are relentless. With no burrow to suffocate your vulnerability, you adapt to accept. And then suddenly, the moment you believed never to cease, the one that felt uncomfortably larger than life itself - it begins to shrink. The colour in your skin intensifies, the sludge that you once dragged yourself through dissipates, and the spring in your step makes itself known. The life that grows from the ashes. New life. To get here? Well, the only way is through. Incredibly gifted trumpeter, composer and beautifully kind soul, @audreypowne naturally reaches for art as a means to express. A story of overcome from a lens of her own micro and macro world, she tells it so in the form of her debut full length release From The Fire. An emotively charged and open-hearted chat, Audrey generously bears so much in a deep dive on Solstice.

:: MIDI MEDITATION ::
Brussels-based sound sculptor Farida Amadou picked up the bass guitar only a decade ago, teaching herself the ways around the instrument. Building her own unique relationship with it, she's now praised for her ability to enliven audiences through her idiosyncratic approach, with compositions incredibly experimental and technical that leave her pieces falling somewhere between free jazz and noise. Having just released her 3-track LP When It Rains It Pours, we study both ourselves and the closing piece 'The Virtuous Circle' for a cyclical Midi Meditation this week.
